Use the colors of your cards to dictate how much to raise. And play a hand like it was another hand altogether.

For instance, one of my favorite hands is ten-eight suited, and I often raise with that hand to mix up my play. Now I won't get silly with it and reraise, but if the action is folded to me anywhere past early position, I will frequently put in a raise. Now you don't want to get caught in reraising battles with your favorite hand, but more often than not, some opponents will call your raise, and then you can play the flop with a continuation bet just as if you still had the best hand. You can also use your poker calculator to help you make better decisions post-flop.

So let's say you actually had a much better hand like AK off-suit and hit top pair with top kicker, where normally you would make the same size of bet at about 2/3rds the pot. Well to mix up your play and confuse opponents, when you want to lead out and bet you can vary your bet size to another amount like for instance a pot size bet, every time you have 2 red cards like AK of hearts or AK of diamonds. This way, you will be betting different amounts in a random pattern, but it wont take any extra brain power on your part to inject some unpredictability into your play.

Anther way to mix up your strategy is to pick a certain hand to play as if it was another hand. Let's say for instance you choose 6-5 suited and you decide every time you get that hand you will play it like Ace King. So with a floip like 8K2, even though you have nothing really you bet out because if you had Ace King, well that's what you would do right? When you go into a hand with a betting strategy for a certain other hand, players tend to put you on the hand that is representative of your actions, not your actual hand.

Confusing your opponents can result in huge pots for you when they have no idea what you are playing. But when the play doesn't work for you, you need to be able to keep the pot size under control, and always have an exit plan when another player reraises you and makes it too expensive. When you go to the river or are heads up, show your cards once in awhile but don't offer any other information. Players may very well end up getting frustrated at your confusing play and walk right into a big mistake against you in a later hand. Hope that helps you an element of deception to your game.

This article is part of a series on how to play soccer, and this article will focus on ball control and the way to get the soccer ball under control as quick and as effectively as possible.

Controlling the ball in soccer is a fundamental skill that is essential when you are learning how to play soccer. In simplistic terms, controlling the ball is the "simple" task of receiving the ball and getting the ball in a position that you want it for your next move. Generally this means getting the ball on the ground and in a position where you are able to kick the ball with your preferred foot in the direction that you wish to kick the ball. Simple, right?

Any part of the body (except for the hands and arm) can be used to control the ball, but the main body parts are the foot, thigh, torso (upper and lower) and head. I have sometimes used the back of my legs too, but only in certain circumstances, which I will explain later. Get Behind the Ball It doesn't really matter what part of the body that is used, the technique is the same. As the ball is approaching, the player must adjust their body position so that they are ready to receive the ball. This means on their toes and ensuring that as much of their body is "behind" the ball. It is imperative to get your body behind the ball for two main reasons.

You will have a front on view of the ball as it approaches and therefore have a better view of the ball.
If you have misjudged the flight of the ball having more of your behind the ball reduces the risk of you not controlling the ball as the ball is likely to connect with another part of your body.

Body Position After getting behind the ball, the player must consider the body position that is needed to control the ball in such a way that the ball is directed where the player wants the ball to go. One good example of this is getting the player to "open up" or receive the ball with an open body stance, allowing the player see more of the playing field and to direct the ball forward, by receiving the ball with their back foot. The technique of "opening up" and receiving the ball with an open stance is invaluable, and one which must be taught to your players. The next time you are watching a televised game, just watch and see how players position themselves when receiving the ball.

Cushioning the ball The last part is the actual contact of the body with the ball. This is the most important part of controlling the ball and needs accurate execution. The technique is to cushion the ball so that the ball does not bounce off the players' body too far. To cushion the ball, simply withdraw the part of the body that is receiving the ball on impact, which "softens the blow" and ensure that the ball stays within reach of the player.

The Next Step One common mistake when teaching players how to play soccer is for players to be taught to stop the ball "dead" and right in front of their foot. When you are learning to control the ball, it is often far better to either have the ball moving in the direction that you want to go at a pace that keeps the ball within your reach and makes the ball ready for your next move, whether that is a shot, a pass or to dribble with the ball. Knowing how to control the ball and getting to do what you want it to as quickly as possible, gives you the edge over your opponents.

Since most Fantasy Football leagues have 12 owners, your goal is to pick one of the top 12 scoring kickers in the league. There are 32 NFL teams, so you have a better than even chance to get a top 12 kicker, even in a blind draw. The difference between the best kicker and the 12th ranked kicker is only about 2 points per game. Everyone knows Gostkowski et al, but who are the true sleepers out there? Sleeper #1

Rian Lindell of the Buffalo Bills finished the 2008 season as the 11th ranked fantasy producer at his position. However, that came in a year that saw one of his worst conversion rates ever, 79%. Because of this, he will fall in most owner's eyes. When one looks deeper into his stats, you see that he was forced to attempt as many kicks from 40+ yards last year as his previous 2 years combined! This means that with the coming of WR Terrell Owens to Buffalo opposite Lee Evans, more attempts from 25 to 35 yards are almost guaranteed, due to the fact that Buffalo has the 13th easiest schedule for WRs. I look for production in the 138 point range, a steal as your last draft pick.

Sleeper #2

Garrett Hartley was perfect as a rookie for the New Orleans Saints last year, while playing in only 8 games. In a standard scoring format, he scored 67 points, which extrapolates to 134 points in a complete season. Getting 8+ points from a kicker you may be able to pick up in the last round is a great value, and you know Drew Brees, Marques Colston, Devery Henderson, Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas are going to move the ball. Kicking in a dome doesn't hurt either, and I look for the second year kicker to see about 135 points this year.

Every year, one owner gets itchy and takes a Gostkowski or Akers with 3 or 4 rounds to go, and touches off a kicker run. DO NOT get caught up in this, pick your kicker last, and take one of the sleepers mentioned above to produce maximum value. Sure a steak dinner for $15 is nice, but if you can get a hamburger for a nickle, it sure as heck tastes better.

Play Golf In Two Countries

Between Spain and Portugal lies the Guadiana River. On its banks, and within a radius of about 30 kilometers, are more golf courses than you can shake a stick at. As a result, it's possible to find a place to stay from which you could reach and play 14 courses in as many days, without ever having to drive for more than 40 minutes.

The Guadiana river provides the border between Portugal and South Western Andalucia, or Huelva, in theCosta de la Luz. It is also the location for an extremely large number of top-notch golf courses, all within easy reach of each other. There is none of the high-rise hotel development here that you will find on the other Costas, since local government has insisted on the preservation of protected natural spaces.
Instead you will find a few attractive hotels, and a good selection of fairly new apartments and villas. The more temperate climate means that it is possible to play golf for most of the year, and, being in a river delta, the area is protected to a large extent from the strong winds that characterise this coast further south.

All these courses are conveniently reached by the airports of Faro in Portugal, or Seville in Spain.

Golf in Portugal.

Castro Marim

This is one of the newest courses to play golf in Portugal, having opened in the year 2000, in an area of the Algarve that until recently had no golfing infrastructure at all. This 18 hole, par 72 course has a very beautiful setting in the peaceful atmosphere of the eastern Algarve, offering players breathtaking views over the Atlantic Ocean, the River Guadiana and the nearby nature reserve. The fairways have been made with Bermuda grass, whilst the greens are made with the new Penn A4 grass. Unless you are a mountain goat, it's advisable to hire a buggy, since parts of the course are extremely steep indeed.

This golf course offers challenges to all levels and abilities. In some places the layout is deceptive, and a well-struck drive could quite easily land in one of the ornamental lakes. Its unique underground irrigation system enables play even in the driest of weathers. A driving range, putting green and putting course are also available for pre-round practice.

Benamor

The late Sir Henry Cotton designed this 18 hole, par 71 course. Sir Henry was apparently inspired by the ancient church, which is now situated next to the clubhouse.

The resulting layout offers a challenge to players of all standards. The course is undulating, but although less hilly than the Castro Marim course, still offers stunning views to the mountains in the north and the Atlantic to the south.

Indigenous olive, cork, carob, fig and almond trees, many of them centuries old, add to the beauty of the area whilst also creating natural hazards. In addition, water hazards and bunkers are strategically placed around the course to test your strategy and accuracy. The greens of Penn A4 are superb, and fairways of Bermuda Sahara provide good opportunities for well-placed shots. There is also a driving range and putting green for you to get in a little practice before you play the course.

Quinta da Cima

This 18 holes, par 72 course is a great test of golf with dog-legs to the right and left, open fairways and well placed bunkers and lakes. A stream with dams and permanent flowing water crosses holes 4, 5, 6 and 13. This is a true championship course. Watch out for the tricky par 5 16th hole, and expect some surprises on the 18th!

This course offers breathtaking views, and is an exceptionally beautiful course to play. From any point on the course the views of the sea and the mountains are a delight. Century-old olive and carob trees and the typical orange groves provide a truly peaceful feel to this wonderful course.

The greens have been seeded with Bent Crenshaw. Tees and fairways are seeded with Zoysia.

Two large driving ranges provide magnificent views of the mountains as well as of the ocean.

The Robinson Golf Academy can be found on the second driving range, which is designed for practice with irons only. It comprises 3 greens and 6 tees for concentrated tuition.

Quinta da Ria

This spectacular 18 hole, par 72 course is situated in the Ria Formosa Natural Park and spreads along a gently rolling area down to the Ria Formosa itself, with a stunning view of the sea and the Huelva coastline
It comprises two loops of 9 holes with each loop having 2 par 5's, five par 4's and two par 3's. Five lakes were strategically built around the course, near greens 5, 10 and 14. Hole 16, a par 5, is played between the two biggest lakes. The green of the par 3 17th brings one of the lakes into play and also has an island where a large number of local bird-life nests. Besides the beauty the lakes bring to the course, they are also used as water reservoirs for irrigation and are nourished by a stream, in play on some holes.

The greens, smoothly undulating, are well protected by bunkers. Greens, tees and fairways are seeded with Bent Crenshaw and the rough with Poa Pratensis with Fescues. There are wide fairways and well maintained rough, so the course is suitable for the higher handicapper.

Although the course is relatively new, it has been planted with more than 300 trees, such as olive and carob, in order to produce a more established feel, and to maintain the ancient border. From any point on the course, one can see both the mountains and the sea. The surrounding orange groves and vineyards contribute to make the landscape of the course even more beautiful.

On this course, as with the Quinta da Cima, there will be no housing development, so there will be nothing except the breathtaking views to distract you from your game. Together these two golf courses provide a fine choice for golf holidays.

For golf in Spain, there are a number of equally beautiful and equally challenging sites.

Isla Canela

This 18 hole par 72 links golf course is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty, overlooking the Guadiana River. It was designed by Catarineu, and completed in 1994. It's set in a beautiful landscape dotted with olive, orange and eucalyptus trees, and offers challenging and entertaining play on its gently sloping dunes.

Trolleys and buggies can be hired from the clubhouse; however there is little need of buggies since the entire course is relatively flat. It extends over a salt marsh crossed by small seawater rivulets.

The gentle slopes are formed by dunes, and the course provides a beautiful landscape dominated by broom, eucalyptus, olive and orange trees some of which require consideration when playing some fairways. Overall, accuracy rather than distance is key here.

Natural lakes border a number of holes, and the greens are generally large and well protected by bunkers. The par five 7th is reachable in two, but the river to the right of the green is likely to catch the unwary. The construction of strategically placed tees means Isla Canela is enjoyable for golfers of all abilities. The club also offers very good practice facilities.

There is a permanent golf school as well as a golf shop, a bar and a restaurant. In addition there is a swimming pool and two bowling greens next to a beautiful terrace on which to sit and relax after a game.
Plans have been approved for a second course on the island, together with a third a little further up the River Guadiana at Costa Esuri.

Islantilla Golf Course

There are 3 separate courses at Islantila, each surrounded by luxuriant vegetation with stunning sea views.

"Course 1" is best suited to medium or low handicappers as it requires precision, stroke ability and skill.
"Course 2" is ideal for high handicappers, as, although it has a somewhat difficult beginning, there are fewer quirks and the layout is less deceptive to the inexperienced eye.
"Course 3" is the official 18 holes par 72 course which requires considerable skill, and is ideal for medium handicappers.

Established 1992 this golf course has been the stage of important events like the "Campeonato de Espana de Profesionales", and the PGA European Challenger Tour.

In addition there is a training centre, the Islantilla Top Golf Academy, which includes: -

Nuevo Portil Golf Course

This 18 hole, par 71 course has been relatively recently built. The design is characterised by wide fairways and gently sloping greens, and follows a path between pines and other local trees, starting out in a wood of Mediterranean pines. It is a rolling type golf course, offering a pleasant walk for those not wishing to use buggies, and the Bermuda fairways, which are lined with indigenous vegetation, offer splendid sea views over the immense dune beaches that are close by. The tiered greens offer a tough challenge for birdie-seekers.

The club has a driving range, pitch and putt area, gym, sauna and swimming pool, together with a four star hotel and clubhouse with coffee shop, restaurant, pro-shop and all golfing facilities.

El Rompido

This 18 hole par 72 course is the furthest east of all those mentioned in this guide. The complex actually comprises two courses, the original South course and the brand new North course.

The South course sits on the edge of a tidal lagoon overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, and sprawls across an interesting mix of parkland and marshland with some amazing views - the walk from the 8th green to the 9th tee takes you across a 650ft pontoon right across the protected marshland where you can see freshwater crabs and an abundance of bird life.

The new North course, which only opened in June 2006, offers a little more challenge. It has been designed by the famous Spanish golf course designer Alvaro Arana. This course winds through protected salt marshes, and offers a varied range of hole styles. The front nine features a run of holes with very tight drives - a typical "risk and reward" opening 9; while the back 9 is shorter, but demands greater accuracy from the fairway into small target greens which are of a consistently high standard.

The complex boasts a five star hotel complete with full health spa, conference and leisure facilities including private beach club, football pitches, tennis and paddle courts and much more. Altogether, it comprises a fully equipped golf resort and spa perfect for a golfing holiday.

Convenient holiday location

For those looking for a holiday location that allows easy access to all courses, it would be difficult to beat the exclusive resort of Isla Canela. Situated on the beach by the pretty town of Ayamonte on the Guadiana River, it is well within an hour's drive of all the courses listed. Indeed the courses at Isla Canela itself and at Castro Marim, are both within 20 minutes' drive. In this little resort you have the choice of 5 hotels, and a good range of rental properties with either golf, sea or marina views, starting from a humble one-bed apartment and progressing to a luxury 3 bed, 2 bath penthouse with breathtaking views and a Jacuzzi on the terrace.

For non-golfing family members the beach apartments are ideal, giving quick and easy access to 7km of lustrous golden sand, with safe beaches for bathing. Small shops, bars and restaurants are all within walking distance, and the little Andalusian town of Ayamonte is a short bus ride away. For days when you might be 'golfed out'(!) it's possible to join a guided coach tour of Seville, or even a jeep safari through the Donana National Park. River trips are also easily available.

Of course, that's if you don't want to just 'chill out' on the beautiful beach!

The Future of Online Poker

Online poker has had an interesting history so far. This popular pastime is enjoyed by hundreds of thousands or recreational players, many of who aren't even sure whether they are breaking any laws or not by playing. There have been scandals at online poker rooms, banking problems, mergers and takeovers, and entire businesses created that sell external software tools to help players do better. Even with all this, the poker rooms are full of players. Poker lovers are determined to play online as long as there is some method available to them for depositing and withdrawing funds.

The future of this industry remains rather cloudy however, despite the fact that it commands a tremendous source of revenue and is popular with the public. So much depends on legal developments within the countries that contain the largest market segments. Currently there is no federal law against online gambling in the United States. However Internet gambling is expressly outlawed in 8 individual states.

More importantly, however, is the fact that there is a law banning banks in the U.S. from making transactions to and from internet gambling institutions. This law was piggybacked on to the "Safe Port Act" on the last day before the Senate broke by the number one Google result for the search term "corrupt senator." It was later discovered that this Senator received 25% of his campaign funds from Harrah's Entertainment, the large offline gambling company. The senator was not re-elected but the law stands.

As a result of this law there was a major reshuffling of power in the online poker industry. The largest online poker room was Party Poker but they decided to pull out of the U.S. to avoid possible legal issues. Several other popular poker rooms and networks followed in suit. The well-known poker rooms who decided to stay have taken over all that business. This put Poker Stars squarely in the number one spot. Party Poker doesn't even make the top five any more.

A major scandal broke at Absolute Poker, one of the top poker rooms as a result of their decision to still cater to the American market. It turns out that several of the software developers had built themselves in "back doors" which allowed them to see other player's cards. These guys fleeced other players out of millions of dollars over a two-year period before they were caught. A legitimate concern over the fairness of games at all internet poker sites naturally resulted.

Private software developers are very creative in making products which help online poker players. Most of these are analytical programs which collect data and sort it into statistics on your opponents. Some of them have amazing features and display this data right on the poker table. Many of these programs are specifically banned at some of the major poker rooms.

Then there are the poker bots. These are banned at all online poker rooms. Not because the site operators have an issue with you using a software program that pays rake automatically for 12 hours per day, but because many recreational players are paranoid of poker bots and so it's a good public relation policy. Interestingly, only Poker Stars has actually done anything about actually preventing them from being used in their games. While most of these programs are of poor quality, a few good ones are starting to emerge. And there is a great interest in them at the retail level.

So what is the future of online poker? Hard to tell, but I will venture a guess. Most likely there will be tougher anti-online gambling laws enacted in the states at some point resulting in a further consolidation of the industry. Perhaps two or three of the largest rooms will still operate there, providing creative banking alternatives as they do now. Expect fewer poker rooms, not more. However the ones that remain will own the industry. And somebody will finally get smart and operate a poker room that encourages the use of outside software, even building your own poker bot.

Make Money With Moving Average Envelopes

The Moving Average has often been maligned as a lagging or look-back indicator. The knock on the MA is that by the time it signals a trade, the move might well be over or the trade far gone.

However, like most problems, there is a solution that can make the MA a prized asset in your trading arsenal once again.

The solution is to use the MA as an over/under indicator instead as a cross-over. The traditional way of using the MA is to plot two MAs of different lengths and take a signal when one crosses over the other - for example when the 5MA crosses over the 10MA.

A better way is to plot a single MA and use price as the signal to take a trade or not. For example if you plot a 5MA, you will only take a trade when price crosses the MA to the downside to go short and to the upside to go long.

This solution is not as simple to implement as it sounds because sometimes after a protracted move to one side away from the MA, it is actually time to reverse. The way to avoid being whipsawed on these moves is to use a Moving Average Envelope.

The MA envelope keeps you away from whip-saws by making sure that a sort of trend has developed before you join the trade. With an envelope, what you do is you set an upper and lower price threshold before you can trade. Your patience is rewarded by more winning trades using the MA Envelope.

This trading technique requires that you exhibit a lot of patience.

To build a MA Envelope, you are faced with making your first decision, and it is a crucial one. What MA setting do you use? Once you have made this decision, it is time to build the envelope.

Let's build one that has proven to be very effective. To answer the first question, we will use the 8 period Moving Average or MA8, plotted on the 30-minute chart.

To build the MA8 Envelope, do the following:

%2B Plot MA 8, Smoothed, Apply to High, color yellow

%2B Plot MA 8, Smoothed, Apply to Low, color yellow

%2B Plot MA 8, Linear Weighted, Apply to Close, color red

There is your MA 8 Envelope.

As you look at your chart now, certain things start to become clearer to you as far as how the price interacts with the envelope.

You will start to notice why some trades that you had taken in the past fizzled and lost you money.

You make money when there is a north/south movement in price. Horizontal or east/west movement is called 'churning'. It is 'one yard and a cloud of dust' as they describe in football, a play with little gain.

These then are the buy and sell rules:

%2B Buy when the candle closes above the MA 8 High

%2B Sell when the candle closes below the MA 8 Low.

The red linear-weighted MA8 plays a very important role in the envelope. It signals price exhaustion. When price is about to reverse or pull back, it moves closer to the left upper or lower corners of the two yellow smoothed Mas that make up the envelope.

In an uptrend, it gluiest itself to the upper left hand corner of the MA8 High, and in a downtrend, it glues itself to the lower left hand corner of the MA 8 Low.

When you see this phenomenon, prepare for either a pull back or a complete price reversal!

In the forex market or in any market that you trade, never trade without a stop loss! I can not over-emphasize this. You can not be 100% right so when you are wrong, save your account from being blown up.

With this envelope, there is a natural stop loss point provided to you. When you are long, use the MA8 Low as your stop and when short, use the MA8 High as your stop. A stop will qualify as a close under or over these averages.

We are often asked what our best sport is in handicapping. We've gotten to the point where we are at the top of the list in every sport, so it's difficult to single one out. However there is no question that our mastery of baseball in the early 1990s is what vaulted me to the point where professional sports handicapping would be my lifelong profession.

In some respects, I became a victim of my own success. In 2005, I had probably my best year winning what we call "Dandy Dogs". Dandy Dogs are moneyline dogs of 140 or more (includes runline plays getting back 140 or more).

The downside was it led me to develop a bias against even small favorites. I've known and preached for years the basics of risk/reward ratio. For example, a 150 favorite needed to have a 60 percent chance of winning to be a break even bet or based on our threshold had to have 70 percent chance of winning to be a premium play. Yet there were nights I'd go 3-4 and still win money because of betting all dogs. Bit by bit, I developed personal chalk reluctance in betting.

Too many well-handicapped favorites of more than 120 became passes for me simply because of my increasing acute prejudice against laying the juice. Since returning to my roots, the 120-160 favorites have been a major reason behind my return to MLB handicapping prominence.

But even with picking our baseball underdogs, we became victims of the successes we had in other sports. We take great pride in being ahead of the curve with modern technology. The Internet made every team the "local team" from a handicapping standpoint because once regional information is now so easily accessible.

The World Wide Web has been a boon to us in preseason NFL with accurate key player rotation and motivation info. In college football and basketball it has revolutionized the way sharp players bet.

While super systems have been a great addition in all sports including baseball, our self scrutiny brought to light that we were allowing the Billy Beane and Bill James inspired new fangled stats to convince us out of winning picks.

In our first two decades of handicapping, we have had significant success with big underdogs by riding either hot but non-elite pitchers and/or fading struggling star pitchers. Yet information overload had us finding a fly ball/ground ball ratio or walks/strikeout percentage that talked us out of the same kind of plays that for decades won for us.

Let there be no doubt whatsoever that ERA and WHIP are still the two most important statistics in foretelling future results of pitchers. Likewise in handicapping offense we have streamlined with great success. Just like for 20 plus years, we returned to utilizing on base percentage and slugging percentage foremost.

We never stop fine tuning our techniques but our introspection reminds us sometimes we need to remember "if it ain't broken, don't fix it". Since returning to our roots in baseball handicapping, not-so-coincidently we have returned to the results our clients and we desire.

With all other sports, utilizing the Internet and cutting edge computer software is imperative to staying ahead of the curve, but MLB is the clear exception. Baseball handicapping is much like playing the game: master the basic fundamentals.

3) Impatience

Patience and foresight are skills which are needed in friendships in order to fit in with others and go with the flow. Encourage your child to anticipate treats and learn the pleasure of waiting for fulfillment.

4) Restricted opportunities to learn

Developing friendship skills take time and practice. The capacity for friendship grows as children mature. Their thinking skills and emotional sensitivity become more refined. Smaller families and our aversion to risk can mean that children have less time to spend with friends. Parental caution can also mean that parents over react when things get tricky between younger children. Avoid the negative spiral of over protection and reduced contact, by organising play dates and encouraging your child to invite friends home. Getting together with other parents can be a good way of providing opportunities for your child to play with others in a safe environment.

5) Lack of mentoring and support

Older kids used to be around to keep an eye on the younger ones, to take them places and show them the ropes. Smaller families still need to guide their children and often formal activities are chosen instead, so football training replaces a kick around with the bigger kids. Children learn the same ball skills but the presence of adults in charge may inhibit the time that kids get just hanging out and watching how the older kids do things. Consider finding some mixed age activities locally or organise something with your relations or work colleagues. Many children now live polarised lives either being with others of exactly the same age at school or being under the guiding wing of an adult. Kids learn a lot from slightly older role models who they can observe, admire and try to emulate.

Simple NFL Betting Systems #49 - the Super-Bowl Effect

After studying and cataloging hundreds of different NFL situational trends over the past decade or-so, I have learned that there are really only 3 distinct types of situations that effectively beat the spread. They each have the ability to expose opportunities for profit versus the line--they just do so in very different ways.

The first and most common category (which accounts for the majority of situations that I employ) covers situations that are based on mathematical measurements of specific areas of team play, which work towards revealing instances where one side may have an advantage over another after the point spread is factored in. Examples of this would include trends based primarily on Rush Offense Ratings, Team Momentum Indicators, or any other statistical measurement of team skill.

The 2nd group involves situations that isolate instances where the betting public is way off with their assessment of team strength and an opportunity for profit based on the resulting 'skewed' line may be present. Many of these situations work their magic in the early part of the season, when bettors are still placing wagers based on what teams did last season, as opposed to what they are exhibiting in the first few weeks of the current season.

The 3rd and final category of situations that I employ can be classed as 'let-down' or 'momentum' situations and this is where my degree in 'Armchair Psychology', as I like to call it, comes in handy.

'Momentum' is both a catch-all phrase and sports cliché that has been so overused in the past few decades, it's hard to give it much credence, especially considering that 99% of the time the term is trotted out (most commonly as part of the mindless on-air commentary of network-TV NFL broadcasts), the team that has been pegged as having the 'so-called' edge in momentum, is in fact, no more likely to cover the spread than their opponent.

The overuse and 'dumbing down' of terms such as 'momentum' and it's polar opposite: the 'let-down' situation, does obscure the fact that there are still many proven situations that exist in the NFL where teams may be in a position to build on a recent positive event, or, perhaps not give forth their best effort due to certain factors working against them.

This category of situations should come with a prominent warning label though--trends based on 'Armchair Psychology' are actually the hardest to prove through subjective analysis and bettors who handicap games purely on the basis of these types of situations can find themselves on a slippery slope indeed.

The important lesson here is that even the most logical-sounding situations that may have had success in the past (one that comes to mind concerns teams facing an inferior non-divisional opponent at home in a game that is sandwiched in between 2 divisional road meetings), may still simply be the product of chance alone, or a combination of luck and many other factors that have nothing to do with the logic of the specific situation itself.

Despite the potential pitfalls involved with 'Category 3' trends, I do still utilize a wide assortment of them on a weekly basis. With this category, I always strive to use only 2-4 Primary conditions and not too many 'tighteners' (Secondary conditions). The KISS approach seems to provide the best chance of future success when working with these highly subjective trends.

It should come as no surprise then, that the particular situation I would like to look at for this article is very simple in nature (this is a 'Simple Systems' article, after all). Its premise is built on how teams perform in an upcoming game, when they happen to be facing the defending Super-Bowl winner in the game immediately after.

It's not uncommon for teams to look beyond their current opponent in certain circumstances, especially if they are a team with a winning record that may be looking to make a statement versus last years champion.

When we take the above Primary condition and add in the stipulation that the current opponent is coming off a Clutch Win (a Clutch win occurs when a team tallies the final score of the game, in either the 4th quarter or overtime, moving them from a tied or losing position, into a winning one), we are left with a system that has produced a record of 2-17 ATS for the team in question since 1994.

All the details for this system are listed below. You will notice that it does play on winning teams more often than not (57.1% of the time) and has involved 16 different teams since 1994--which is excellent when you consider that only just over 20 games have met its criteria (this includes 'pushes' which are not shown in the overall record of 2-17 ATS).

(Notes: ASMR stands for Average Spread Margin Rating. A positive rating indicates a trend that is stronger than average versus the line, negative--weaker than average. TDIS% is the percentage of teams in the league that have been involved in this situation at one time or another. WT% is the percentage of teams that are .500 or better and SPR is the average spread for teams in this situation. For more details, please consult Page 13 of my 2007 NFL Game Sheets Guide.)

How to Play Craps Proposition Bets

Knowledgeable gamblers and even most novice craps players know that the proposition box at the center of the craps game contains bad bets. Even so, the promise of high 30 for 1 and 15 for 1 payoffs advertised on the felt entices many players. On a hot craps game, the proposition box is usually as jammed up with bets as the pass line and place bets.

Despite the aggressive house advantage on all proposition bets, the fact remains that for many people they are fun to play. First-time players at the craps table are always curious about the proposition bets. The horn bet sounds so mysterious and people want to know just what the “hardway” is.

How to play proposition bets and grasping what they actually pay are not easy aspects of learning craps. Game procedures restrict players from accessing the proposition box, and players must have their bets set up through the dealers. A player generally communicates to the dealer on the stick position which bet he or she wants and then tosses the chips to the dealer. Players can also tell their dealer on the inside position that they want a proposition bet, and then that dealer will get it set up with the stick dealer.

The most popular proposition bets are the hardways and then the horn bet. Hardways refer to the four, six, eight, or ten rolling as a perfect pair. For example, a hard six is the roll of three and three as opposed to the roll of four and two. A hardway bet wins when the dice roll this perfect pair combination. The bet will lose when the number rolls as a non-pair or the seven rolls. Other rolls do not affect the hardway bets.

Hard six and hard eight pay 10 for 1 and hard four and hard ten pay 8 for 1. Note that the statement is 10 for 1 and not 10 to 1. This means that for the 10 units that you win, you give up 1 unit to the house. Typically, a winner with $1 on the hard six, for example, will be paid $9 and left up on the bet for $1. The concept of giving up the original bet for the payoff often bothers new players who are expecting to get another dollar.

During come out rolls, hardway bets are automatically shut off, meaning that they are not in action until a point number is marked. Players have the option of turning their hardway bets on during come out rolls.

Horn bets, unlike hardways, are one-roll bets. A one-roll bet will either win or lose on the next roll of the dice. Because of the one shot nature of one-roll bets, they mostly have the high 30 for 1 or 15 for 1 payoffs.

The horn bet combines the numbers two, three, eleven, and twelve into one bet that is a four way split. A $4 minimum is required on a horn bet in order to place $1 on each part of the horn. If, on the next roll, one of the horn numbers wins, then the portion of the bet on that number will be paid. For example, on a roll of twelve, the $1 on the twelve won 30 for 1, or $29. However, the other three parts of the horn lost, which means $3 must be subtracted from the payoff. The result is then that the player receives $26 and still has a $4 horn up for the next roll.

Players seem to pursue proposition bets simply for the thrill of hitting the long shot. Many people who are doing well with the friendlier bets on the pass or don’t pass can fritter away winnings in the proposition box by keeping all the hardways in action or always betting horns on the come out.

The experience of playing the proposition box ranges from fun to frustrating, but it is always expensive. Good gamblers resist the temptation.

The Horn bet is actually four separate bets on the 2, 3, 11, and 12; therefore, your bet amount should be divisible by four. Like the 3-Way Craps bet, when you win a Horn bet, you win on the number that shows and lose the other three bets. If a 2 shows, the payoff is 30:1; and your 3, 11, and 12 lose. If a 12 shows, the payoff is 30:1; and your 2, 3, and 11 lose. If a 3 shows, the payoff is 15:1; and your 2, 11, and 12 lose. If an 11 slows, the payoff is 15:1; and your 2, 3, and 12 lose. The boxes for the 2, 3, 11, and 12 are clearly marked in the proposition area. Since the dealer controls the Horn bet (keep your hands off), he puts one fourth of your chips in each of the 2, 3, 11, and 12 boxes. (Some layouts include a box for the Horn bet.)

Be careful making Horn bets that don't result in whole numbers after being split (i.e., when the dealer divides your chips into four equal amounts). If you win and the resulting payoff includes a fraction of a dollar, the casino can't pay you that fraction, so they keep it for themselves. Many players are lazy and don't like counting out four $1 chips, which are also hard to toss to the middle of table without making a mess. If a 12 shows, the payoff is 30:1; and your 2, 3, 11, and 7 lose. If a 3 shows, the payoff is 15:1; and your 2, 11, 12, and 7 lose. If an 11 shows, the payoff is 15:1; and your 2, 3, 12, and 7 lose. If a 7 shows, the payoff is 4:1; and your 2, 3, 11, and 12 lose.

Depending on the table layout, the Whirl bet may or may not have its own box in the center of the table. For layouts that don't, the dealer typically divides your chips into five equal amounts and places them in the 2, 3, 11, 12, and Any Seven boxes. Be careful making Whirl bets that don't result in whole numbers after dividing your total bet by 5. If you win and the resulting payoff includes a fraction of a dollar, the casino can't pay you that fraction, so they keep it for themselves. Unless you're good at math and can calculate in your head whether fractional bets will result in a whole-number payoff, it's best to simply toss the dealer an amount divisible by five to avoid the potential for dealing with cents.

Betting the Halftime Line in Football

We have found that betting the halftime lines of a NFL game is very profitable if done right. There are several things you must do to put the odds in your favor. The first and most important thing is research the game before it starts. We recommend not betting the start of the game. If you have a play at the beginning of the game then it is strong enough to warrant it and a halftime play is not usually needed. Anyway, study the game before it starts. Get an Idea how the game will play out. Know the injuries to start the game. I usually try to predict the first half results. Lastly, know the starting line and total. Divide it by 2 and have the numbers written down also.

Watch the first half of the game closely and pay attention to the injuries. Of course if there is a significant injury this will indicate a major change for the second half. A lot of times the not so significant injuries are the most important. Say for instance both Defensive Backs on a team got beat up and one is out. This gives the opposing team a big advantage and especially if they are a throwing team. Also this last type of injury may not be reflected in the halftime line.

Another thing to watch is the turnovers and how they affect the first half. This is a little tricky because turnovers can affect the score and sometimes not. For instance if a game you predict to go over is way under at halftime was it because of turnovers deep in the other teams territory. The same works the other way, if a game is way over and you picked it to go under but a couple interceptions or fumbles were returned for touchdowns put it over. In both these situations your original bet of over or under is the right pick in the second half because it is very unusual to have that many turnovers again.

The score is another factor in second half betting. If there is a blowout in the first half, this can greatly affect the second half bet. Most teams do not run up the score on other teams and play their reserves. A lot of times you are betting on the reserves of the leading team against the first string of the losing team. In the fourth quarter there is a good chance both teams will have their second string in.

The last thing to take into affect is the weather and field conditions. This also is a double edged sword. If you see the weather getting worse as the game goes on then you have to bet accordingly. This is also true if the weather is getting better and the field is in good condition. Then weather may not be a factor but the line may reflect it is. In this case there may be a low under but you know the players are not slipping and will be able to score.

I have given you many things to look for at half to tilt the odds in your favor. A lot of times the scenarios listed above do not happen or are minor enough to let you to bet the second half depending on your prediction before the game. If your predictions are correct great make you bet. If you predicted the game wrong make your adjustment and bet accordingly. Always remember that if you are not confident in the second half bet do not make it. The point is to get odds in your favor and if they are not, lay off this time.

Steve Smith (CAR), Wes Welker, Torry Holt, Anquan Boldin, Justin Gage, Eddie Royal, Mark Clayton, Mushin Muhammad, Bryant Johnson, Bernard Berrian, Louis Murphy, and Patrick Crayton are among the top 30 targeted WRs yet they aren't among the top 30 fantasy scoring WRs. That's a staggering 40%.

While it is a useful statistic, do not put too much stock in it. The most important statistic for a WR is TDs. It is no coincidence that the top ten scoring WRs all have 3 or 4 TDs so far. Obviously a close second is yardage. That's where the scoring comes from.

PPR leagues add a point per reception, but I am vehemently opposed to PPR leagues. It overvalues possession receivers and short-changes deep threats. For the life of me I can not figure out why someone would agree that 3 catches for 15 yards should be more valuable than 1 30 yard catch. That's a different discussion for a different day.

The bottom line is use targets as a guide, but don't ignore the age old indicators of fantasy production.

Does it Make Sense to Sit Postup Fantasy Basketball Players Against Top Ranked Defenses?

This article will explore how important match ups are in fantasy basketball. We all know fantasy football is game that is very dependent on defensive match ups so we wanted to see if defensive match ups were also a factor in fantasy basketball. In particular we wanted to focus our analysis on the impact of superior interior defense on the low post offense. To do this we examined average post player performance versus the leagues premier interior defenses.

A quick survey of the league indicates that only Boston, LA, Denver and San Antonio have the type of interior defense that one might want to shy away from. Boston has the combination of Garnett, Sheed, and Kendrick Perkins which is probably the best the league has to offer. All three are just about 7 feet tall and Garnett is former defensive player of the year. The Lakers are also a team of above average size. Between Gasol, Byum, Odem and Artest the Lakers have one of the best interior defenses in the Western Conference.

Denver is the one Western Conference team that could challenge for that title with Nene, Birdman and Kenyon Martin combining like Megatron to have the Nuggets blocking shots into the upper decks. Finally, any discussion around interior defense cannot neglect the San Antionio Spurs who always bring it defensively. Duncan and McDysess are two old school defensive OGs who along with the excellent help-side defense of their teammates can really shut down the oppositions post game.

Lets dig right into some numbers. Table 1 shows the average point and rebound differential for NBA teams post players going against the four superior defensive teams used in our data set. In aggregate, post players can expect a dip in scoring (-3.07ppg) and rebounding (-0.71rpg) when going against the leagues top defenses. While these results are not large deviations from a given post players season average, the take away message is that you should not expect the monster game that will increase your season average when going against an elite defense.

A few more interesting things come out of this analysis. First, the impact of a superior post defense has a more profound effect on scoring than rebounding. Furthermore, the analysis indicates that while we have qualitatively identified 4 superior defensive teams it appears that Boston and Denver seem to be a tier above the San Antonio and LA defenses. In fact, if you remove SA and LA then the avg point and rebound differentials become -6 ppg and close to -1 rpg.

So the question remains, should you bench players based on defensive math ups. We will stick to the same recommendation that we made for football. Never bench your star players, but use defensive match ups as go/no-go decision metric for playing mid-tier players or inconsistent players.

So there you have it, defensive match ups do play a role in fantasy basketball, at least from the post players perspective. While the differentials are not drastic, they do support the fact your mid-tier players less likely to over perform against a superior defense. Luckily for you the NBA has largely become a guards game and there only a handful of defenses with sufficient personnel to create match up problems is the low post.

Just how important is it to have a top tier quarterback on your fantasy football team? We have heard time and time again that the running back position is the most important slot to fill on your fantasy football team. In recent years with the emergence of the running back by committee we have begun to see the argument that a top WR may be worthy of a pick over a running back. The common belief on quarterbacks is that it is a deep position where you can still get acceptable performance from the average starter. This article will challenge that thesis and explore the fantasy football quarterback position in depth.

The one statistic that trumps all in fantasy football is the league championship. That is what we all strive for and is the ultimate measure of success. Taking a close look at my league over the last five years yields interesting results (Table 1). Every championship team over the past five years had a top tier quarterback. In fact, in three of the five sample years the championship team has had the number one ranked quarterback at the end of the season. In all five seasons, there was a never a champion without a top three quarterback. While the overall sample size is small (one league, five years) we still think the results are significant. So not only do you need to get lucky and avoid injury to win a championship, but you will also need maximum performance from the quarterback position to have a shot at the title.

Next we took a look at the top 25 quarterbacks from 2008 to see if we could determine a cut off between the various grades of quarterback. The goal here is to answer the question: "Do you really need to go out and draft the #1 ranked quarterback, or are their other players who can be had later in the draft with an equal chance of finishing the season in the top 3? Looking at the top 25 quarterbacks from 2008 we can separate the distribution into 5 cohorts (Table 2). There is a clear difference in performance across the cohorts. What this tells us is that ranking quarterbacks based on tier is a valid methodology. Furthermore, selecting a quarterback from the first cohort (top 5 qb) should help to ensure that you finish the year with a top 3 quarterback and a shot at your league title. Another thing the distribution really emphasizes is large difference between the top and average quarterbacks.

Lastly, we wanted to take a look at the variability in week-to-week performance across the top 25 quarterbacks. We have already established that the top tier quarterbacks put up more points over the length of the season, but just how consistent is this performance? If the top qbs are getting their numbers in a handful of games that should not really contribute as much to consistent fantasy winning. Table 3 breaks the top 25 quarterbacks up into 5 cohorts. Analyzing the standard deviation in weekly fantasy points across the 5 buckets indicates there is no difference in variability from the top cohort and bottom cohort of quarterbacks. What that means is the best quarterbacks in the league are just as likely to have a bad game as the mid-tier/lower-tier quarterback options. However, since the top tier qb's output is consistently higher they will produce more points throughout the season. In other words, a bad game from a top qb is a lot better than a bad game from a bottom tier qb.

So what have we learned? It appears that you need a top tier quarterback to win your league. The top quarterbacks put up more points and are no more erratic in the distribution of their scoring than an average quarterback. Drafting a quarterback projected to finish in the top 4 is a safe bet to ensure your quarterback is a top ranked player at the end of the season and you have a chance to win your fantasy football championship!

He's not in Denver anymore. His best receivers are his tight end and running back now. The Bears will still try to rely on their running game and defense. Cutler shouldn't be drafted before many of the quarterbacks he's being drafted before.

RUNNING BACKS

Tomlinson, LaDainian SD

Yes, he could very well bounce back for one great comeback year. He's aging, and he proved last year that injuries can derail him now. I just can't take that kind of chance in the middle of my first round.

Westbrook, Brian PHI

The Eagles drafted LeSean McCoy this past summer for insurance. When Westbrook gets hurt this year, the Eagles will rest him and barely skip a beat.

Smith, Kevin DET

He's a great, great back, but you don't burn a second round pick on a Lions running back when they'll be playing from behind constantly. He could make up for it in PPR leagues, but still, I wouldn't take him until Round 4.

Thomas, Pierre NO

People are writing him off because of his injury and the crowded backfield, but he has the potential to provide great value if you can snag him in the fifth round.

Addai, Joseph IND

He won't hold off the rookie Donald Brown enough to earn his ADP.

Jones, Thomas NYJ

They'll use Leon Washington more anyway, but Jones overachieved last year, and this year opponents will stack the box if/when the rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez can't stretch the field for Jones.

He's toast, pure and simple. The Browns will turn to a combination of Jerome Harrison and James Davis before long.

WIDE RECEIVERS

If things go south in Buffalo, Owens could get pretty worthless pretty fast. Really, how well can a guy with his personality take being blown out often?

Quinn's arm isn't strong enough to take advantage of Edwards. He'll be a terribly inconsistent fantasy wide receiver.

He could pan out, but I wouldn't waste a fourth round pick on him to find out if he will or not. Jason Witten should overshadow him in fantasy football.

He is okay to nab in the seventh or eighth rounds, but he's being drafted before that based on last year's numbers. Byron Leftwich is an awful quarterback, and the Bucs will try and run the ball as much as possible.

Okay, so he won't be a bust in the true sense of the word, but people expecting him to duplicate last year's numbers would be mistaken. Michael Turner and Roddy White will see to it that his numbers decline in 2009.

What to do First

When you are learning how to play soccer, then the very first thing that you should do is ensure that you develop great technical skill. Getting technical skill can only be done through a lot of practise and repetition of various soccer drills. Whilst teamwork and tactics play a huge part in the way a team plays, the teams performance will be limited based on the technical ability of the players and the level of skill that players have.

The basic skills that are required for soccer player are:

I was in a team once that had limited technical ability compared with the majority of teams in our league, but guess what we were runners up in the league purely because we were the fittest team in the league and often won games in the dying minutes, because we were fit enough to "run the opposition off their legs". So never underestimate the impact that fitness will have on your game.

Rules of Soccer

There are various forms of soccer, ranging from micro soccer (3 a side) to the standard game of 11 a side. FIFA are the worldwide governing body for soccer, and it is FIFA who control the laws of the game that dictate how to play soccer from a rules perspective. Understanding the laws of the game does have a bearing on what you do, and all players should make sure they understand the laws of the game.

Arsenal tactical boss, Arsene Wenger has gone full length to acquire the versatile former Chelsea right back Lassana Diarra.

The Ace Rothstein Strategy - The Educated Bettor

PROS: This strategy says you draft players who are second in the committee, but play alongside another player with a history of injury. Ideally you would be to try to get one feature back and pair him with a number of #2's who have a realistic chance to step in at some point in the season.

CONS: The risk here is that the #2, never becomes a #1.

Like investing, the strategy you choose to employ should be based on your level of comfort with risk. We recommend the Ace Rothstein theory, as the #2 that becomes a #1 is often the breakout story of the year come playoff time.
